There are scores of brands selling affordable smartphones in the country, and mobile users looking for the most affordable way to get on a 5G network are on the hunt. Right now, there are two contenders for the title of cheapest 5G phone in India – Lava Blaze 5G and Jio Phone 5G. Lava is a well-known manufacturer of affordable smartphones. They have officially announced the Blaze 5G, and the features include Android 12, a 6.5-inch LCD with 720p resolution and 90Hz refresh rate, an 8MP selfie camera, 50MP rear camera, and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. On the inside, it is powered by a Dimensity 700 5G chipset and 4GB of RAM. Internal storage is 128GB, and there is a slot for a microSD card, so you can expand that built-in storage. Keeping the lights on is a 5,000 mAh battery. Lava says that the Blaze 5G will go on sale on or towards October 24, 2022 at “around INR10,000”. What of Jio Phone 5G? Coming from the stable of Reliance Telecom in partnership with Google, the Jio Phone 5G will not arrive till Reliance’s 5G coverage has hit a threshold of users. Reliance Jio Chairman Akash Ambani has stated that, “Jio plans to cover the entire India by December. We will make it very affordable; it should be affordable for every Indian, from device to service.” It is safe to expect that the 5G Jio phone will hit the markets by or before December 2022. There are no details of its features and specs yet, but the grapevine says it will be powered by a 5G Snapdragon chipset. The Jio Phone 5G will, reportedly, cost between INR 8,000 and INR 12,000. If reliance’s antecedents are anything to go by, their entry-level 5G smartphone will cost less than the Blaze 5G. However, we will have to wait to see it play out.
